The Grey Tales unfortunately, isn’t about 50 Shades of Grey.  It is actually about elephants.  Yes, elephants.

The beautifully designed interactive helps you learn about why we need to protect elephants.

This is what the designers had to say about the piece:

“The genesis of this beloved project began when we were travelling through Vietnam. We stayed for a few days in Buon Ma Thuot. While enjoying some wonderful food, we met two French girls who were working as volunteers at a local school. Together, we decided to take a guided hike through the nearby national park.

It was early in the trip and we didn’t know much about elephants or how they were treated. That’s why, after lunch, when the guide suggested we take an hour-long elephant ride, we agreed to try it.

The first impression was amazing. You climb a ladder reaching a higher platform before dropping your feet onto the elephant’s back. If you have ever ridden a horse, you can probably imagine what it’s like to sit on top of such a captivating creature. It is an awe-inspiring feeling.

However, not long after our ride had begun, the mahout started to use his spike to hurt the elephant, shouting at him so frequently that we were forced to draw our attention to the suffering he was causing. The ride went on for what seemed like an eternity, with the only time spent enjoying our encounter being when the elephant was allowed to eat. Seeing its trunk wrap around the plants was the only seemingly natural part of the trip, and it made us quite happy.

At a certain point, we tried to stop the mahout, asking him to stop hurting the elephant, yet he pretended he didn’t understand, that he didn’t speak English, that he couldn’t comprehend our gestures.
The ride left us with a lasting impression, a bitter taste. We were unable to enjoy the rest of the day because of the shocking treatment — the inflicted pain that the elephant was victim to.

As soon as we got home, we decided to do something about it. There are countless stories about the horrible treatment of elephants, and we wanted to take a stand against it. We want to show how elephants are gracious, beautiful and amazing creatures with uncanny similarities to us humans. So we built a site dedicated to their happiness, their griefs and their anger.

These are The Grey Tales.”
